Description
Under the direct supervision of the Tutorial Programs Manager and Director of Operations, the Academic Mentor shall be responsible for providing direct tutorial services to assigned students in the subject areas of English/Language Arts or Mathematics in their homes, community centers, libraries and/or school sites.
Responsibilities and Functions of the Job
• Provide academic assistance in the areas of English/Language Arts or Mathematics to assigned students, either in a group or individually in the home. (Parent must be present in the home during services.)
• Attend periodic training sessions provided by EnTo to increase competency in working with students.
• Be responsible for maintaining records on each student who is being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
• Provide evaluations and other reports as requested by EnTo.
• Responsible for student recruitment and parent outreach efforts.
• Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
• Help students develop self-confidence, raise self-concept, and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
• Abide by the school districts and EnTo rules and regulations at all times.
• Help students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
• Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
• Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
• Establish and maintain rapport with the assigned student(s), their parents and EnTo personnel.
• Serve as a role model at all times for students being served.
• Assist in providing feedback related to program improvement; supplemental material, workbooks, manipulatives and scheduling.
Qualifications
• Current College Student with Junior or Senior standing, Teaching Credential, Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in related field.
• Bilingual (English, Hmong, Spanish, etc.) preferred but not required.
• Related work experience in the area of youth development.
• Strong work ethic and positive attitude that includes flexibility, optimism, and a good sense of humor.
• Highly organized and punctual; ability to sort/categorize information and meet deadlines
• A strong ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Must be willing to travel and occasionally work evenings and weekends.
• Must have the ability to keep meticulous records.
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people and through various communication vehicles (e-mail, phone, voicemail, written correspondence, etc.).
• Capable of taking initiative.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, type, stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, and drive. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, the ability to adjust focus and work for extended periods of time.

Licenses and Other Requirements
• Possess CA Drivers License.
• Must have a reliable car and maintain updated license and insurance for site visits.
• Must be fingerprinted upon offer of employment and pass Dept. of Justice background check.
Compensation
Part Time, Hourly Rate: $10.00
